Difference between Mild Steel wire and High tensile Steel Wire

Mild Steel Wire (MS Wire) and High Tensile Steel wire are the types of steel wires. Both of them have different compositions, properties, and applications. In this blog, we will discuss all the differences between MS Wire and High Tensile Steel Wire. Let's discuss them one by one.

Composition:

MS Wire –

MS Wire also known as Mild Steel Wire has very low carbon content ranging from 0.05% to 0.25%. Sometimes manganese, silicon, sulphur, and phosphorous, are also added along with carbon to enhance the properties of Mild Steel Wire.

High Tensile Steel Wire –

High Tensile Steel Wire has a higher carbon content than mild steel wire. It has a carbon content ranging from 0.6% to 0.9%. Chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum are also added to the high-tensile steel wire to increase its strength and enhance its properties.

Tensile Strength:

MS Wire –

Mild Steel Wire has low tensile strength because of its low carbon content. It is used for applications where less strength or stress is required.

High Tensile Steel Wire –

This wire has high carbon content as compared to MS Wire. Hence, it has high tensile strength and yield strength. Hence, it is used in those applications where high stress is required.

Flexibility:

MS Wire -

Mild Steel Wire is highly Malleable in nature. It is easy to work with as it can be cut, bent, and molded into different shapes without breaking or cracking. It can also be easy to weld because of its flexibility.

High Tensile Steel Wire –

It has less flexibility as compared to MS Wire. It is difficult to bend as the chances of breaking or cracking are high. It has low ductility and requires greater forces to bend or break.

Cost:

MS Wire –

Mild Steel Wire has very low carbon content. Its manufacturing process is also very simple and short. Therefore, it is less expensive as compared to other wires. It is widely available due to its affordable nature.

High Tensile Steel Wire –

The carbon content in this wire is very high and its manufacturing process comprises various complex stages. Therefore, it is more expensive as compared to MS Wire.

Corrosion Resistance:

MS Wire –

Mild Steel Wire is highly prone to corrosion as the extra carbon layer is removed from it during the descaling process. An anti-corrosion layer is applied on its surface to protect it from rusting.

High Tensile Steel Wire –

This type of steel wire has good corrosion resistance properties as compared to MS Wire. This may be due to the presence of different other alloying elements. Therefore, an extra anti-corrosion layer is not required in this wire.

Manufacturing Process:

MS Wire -

MS Wire is manufactured from MS Rods. These rods undergo many processes to form MS Wire (HB & HHB). Manufacturing processes include Descaling, Wire Drawing, Annealing, Chemical treatment, Final Drawing, and Packaging.

High Tensile Steel Wire -

This type of steel wire is manufactured from Billets or Rods. These billets then undergo Descaling, Heating, Drawing, Annealing, Final Drawing, coating, heat treatment, surface treatment, and packaging process to form High Tensile Steel Wire.

Applications:

MS Wire –

MS Wire has low tensile strength. Therefore it is used in the manufacturing of fasteners, nails, screws, spokes, rivets, crafting purposes, fencing, etc.

High Tensile Steel Wire -

This type of wire is widely used in the construction industry, suspension bridges, high tensile cables, ropes bearing heavy loads, automotive parts, machine parts, and various other places where high stress-bearing property is a must.

In Conclusion, MS Wire is known for its low carbon content, easy availability, and ease of working properly and is used in those applications where less stress is required whereas High Tensile Steel wire is harder and stronger as compared to MS Wire and has high carbon content. Due to its high tensile strength, it can be easy to withstand tough conditions. Vishal Industries Chandigarh manufactures Premium Quality MS Wire (HB & HHB), Annealed Wire, and Boron Steel Wire.
